SALISBURY — The Monday blaze at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center which prompted a large response from the Salisbury Fire Department was confirmed on Tuesday to have started in the kitchen.
According to information from the City of Salisbury, the fire department received an alarm at 6:31 p.m. from the hospital on Old Mocksville Avenue.
“It was confirmed as a fire while they were enroute,” the city’s communications director, Anne Little, said in an email.
Crews reportedly arrived at the scene a few minutes later to a “grill fire in the cafeteria.”
According to Little, the fire was “quickly extinguished,” and the damage was “confined to the cooking appliance.”
However, according to Little’s email, there was some smoke in the cafeteria area.
Following protocol for such an incident in a food prep area, the Rowan County Health Department assessed the situation and deemed the cafeteria safe to reopen. A request for information from the hospital was not returned.
Traffic in the immediate area of the hospital was impacted while crews responded to the fire.
