POOLETOWN — One person was airlifted after a single-vehicle crash in eastern Rowan County early Thursday morning.
The crash occurred in the 4200 block of Reeves Island Road, near the Richfield Road intersection.
Pooletown Volunteer Fire Department Chief Ryan Barkley said on scene that firefighters were dispatched to the scene at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Thursday.
Firefighters arrived on scene and found one vehicle off the roadway and pinned against a tree, said Barkley. One man was in the vehicle and was semiconscious, he confirmed. Because of the position of the vehicle, firefighters were forced to perform an extensive extrication, including removing the roof from the vehicle and spreading the vehicle to gain access to the man.
The man was fully extricated from the car at approximately 2:10 a.m. and was taken to the nearby Pooletown Fire Station on Richfield Road, where he was airlifted to the hospital for further treatment.
Barkley said that the man remained semiconscious during the extraction, but was verbal at the time he was removed. The man appeared to have suffered serious injuries, he said.
The crash also damaged a nearby utility pole, causing a power outage in the area. At the time of the crash, Union Power Cooperative estimated that power would be restored by 6 a.m.
The N.C. State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
