WOODLEAF — A 58-year-old Woodleaf woman is behind bars on Tuesday after allegedly trying to kill her husband in his sleep.
According to the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Paula Rena Marlowe is charged with attempted first degree murder for her role in the incident that occurred shortly before 2:52 a.m. on Tuesday in the residence located at 880 Needmore Road.
Deputies responded to the intersection of Godbey Road and Woodleaf Road in reference to assisting EMS crews. When they arrived, they reportedly found Jerry Marlowe being treated for a “large laceration on his neck that extended to his shoulder.”
His wife, the accused, reportedly told deputies that “Jerry woke her up stating that he needed to go to the hospital, and that he was bleeding, so she was driving him to the hospital.”
Deputies reportedly contacted investigators with the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) who responded to the residence. During the course of the investigation, they conducted an interview with the accused, during which time she reportedly confessed to assaulting her husband while he was asleep.
Reports indicated that according to her statement, she “intended to kill her husband, set the residence on fire, and then take her own life due to alleged financial difficulties.”
Investigators determined the plan was interrupted when she got scared during the assault and fled the bedroom before carrying out the remainder of what she described.
The victim sustained serious injuries but survived the attack. He is currently receiving medical treatment and is expected to recover. His family has been notified and is aware of the investigation and his wife’s confession.
Following the interview, Marlowe was taken into custody without incident. Additional charges may be considered as the investigation continues.
