Record in Moir tournament from 2000-2024: 42-17
Championships: 10 (2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2016)
Lean years: Hornets were winless in the tournament in 2002 and 2014
Salisbury won nine straight Moir tournaments from 2003-2011, a streak that may stand as a record forever. The Hornets accomplished that feat with four different head coaches. Jennifer Shoaf coached the first four champs. The Hornets won 23 straight Moir games in that era.
Believe it or not, Salisbury has won only one Moir tournament since 2011. That was the 2016 tournament.
The Hornets won multiple state championships in the Kyla Bryant years, but no Moir titles. Bryant played well in 2019 on a third-place Moir team. COVID wiped out the 2020 tournament. The 2021 tournament was stopped by a shooting in the lobby after the Hornets had won their first two games. Salisbury didn’t play in the Moir in 2022.
All-time Moir team (2000-24):
Shayla Fields — She’s the captain. Fields’ performance in 2003 may have been the best two-game Moir effort ever — 35 points in a competitive semifinal win and 34 in an epic 61-60 championship game victory against West Rowan. Fields also was a superstar in winning MVP honors in 2004. In the championship game, she carried the Hornets, scoring 36 points in a 51-46 victory. Fields also did fine in the Moir tourneys in 2001 and 2002. She scored 223 points in her nine Moir games. That’s almost 25 per game.
Brielle Blaire — Blaire was fantastic in winning MVP honors in 2011, scoring 72 points in the tournament, with 33 of them in a 71-67 win against Carson in a super title game. In 2012, the Hornets didn’t win the tournament, but Blaire was stellar — 29-25-27.
Shi-Heria Shipp — Shipp was a three-time MVP from 2006-08. No other girl has done that. She deserved all the awards — she was a consistently excellent player on great teams — but she also had a lot of help in the Moirs from Kwameshia Hicks and Bubbles Phifer and others. The Hornets were so dominant, there wasn’t much championship-game drama in those years. The Hornets’ two games in 2007 were 72-25 and 76-27.
Tyzarea Alexander — Moir MVP in 2016, she turned in a memorable 22-point effort in an entertaining championship game with Carson.
Ashley Watkins — She didn’t have knockout numbers (25 points in 2 games), but she was the 2005 Moir MVP for providing the willpower for a 43-39 grinder in the championship game with North Rowan.
Honorable Mention: Ayanna Holmes was Moir MVP in 2010 when the Hornets had a dominant squad. A very solid player on an all-star team, Holmes scored 12 and 11 in two blowouts. The Hornets beat Carson in the final by 25 points. … Bryanna Troutman and Aniya Fulson were very good in the Moir. The MVP nod went to Alexander in 2016, but Troutman and Fulson also had terrific tournaments. … MaKayla Noble had a great Moir in 2023, scoring 63 points in three games. … Bryant averaged 13 points in the 5 Moir games she got to play in.
