A young woman gave an impassioned speech on Saturday in defense of the unborn during the annual Walk for Life event in downtown Salisbury.
Gabrielle Ponds was one of the many faces that made their way from Life Choices Rowan, a pro-life organization in town, to the Rowan County Courthouse steps as part of the yearly demonstration.
“I’m so honored to be here today,” Ponds told the large crowd that gathered beneath the courthouse columns. Others sought refuge under a nearby tree, while Ponds’ speech air through speakers on both sides of North Main Street.
“Seventeen years ago, my mom was just a 17-year-old herself and she chose life,” Ponds said. “Because of her courage, my parents’ strength, and their love, I’m standing here today. And I don’t take that for granted.”
Ponds recited a Bible verse that is an oft-echoed refrain among pro-life supporters.
“The Bible says in Jeremiah 1:5, ‘Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart,’” Ponds said. “That means every single life has purpose, value and meaning, before we ever take our first breath.
“I am living proof that even in unexpected or difficult situations, something beautiful can come from choosing life. Today, as we walk, we’re not just taking steps, we’re standing for hope, for love, and for the lives that are yet to be written.”
In closing, Webb asked everyone to bow their heads as she prayed.
“Thank you for the gift of life,” she said. “Thank You for creating each of us with purpose and intention. I pray for every mother facing a difficult decision, that you would give her strength, peace and support. Surround her with love and remind her she is not alone. Help us to be a community that encourages, uplifts, and chooses life in all we do.”
Numerous area churches joined in Saturday’s demonstration, such as New Hope Baptist Church’s Youth Choir led by Jacob and Amber Lingle. Local officials, including Sen. Carl Ford and Rowan County Board of Commissioners Chair Greg Edds were in attendance.
The event coincides with Abortion Recovery Awareness Month.
Life Choices Rowan noted on their Facebook page that the organization “stands with those seeking hope, support and restoration,” adding, “We offer compassionate care to women and men on the journey to healing from an abortion experience.”
The event also offered an inside glimpse into Life Choices clinic, live music and some grub.
