MOUNT ULLA — Jacob Mills made five 3-pointers in the first quarter and gave Carson’s boys basketball team a jolt of energy at the start on Friday.
West Rowan battled hard on its home floor, but Carson took a 65-54 South Piedmont Conference victory to stay tied for first with Robinson.
“Jacob cooled off some, but he got us started, and that was so important on the road,” Carson head coach Brian Perry said. “It’s a good win. It’s always tough to win at West.”
Mills finished with 22 points. Drew Neve made four 3-pointers, scored 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds. CP Perry made only one 3-pointer, but he had 13 points, nine assists and six steals. Will Hall contributed eight rebounds.
Carson (13-1, 4-0) connected for a dozen 3s. Jaxson Martin and Maverick Walters made one each.
West is playing without point guard Ja’mih Tucker, but had big man Josiah Young back in the lineup. Young missed Tuesday’s game with Robinson with illness, but he scored a healthy 17 against the Cougars.
West trailed 20-11 after Mills’ sizzling start, but Young’s nine-point second quarter got the Falcons back in the game. They were down only 31-27 at halftime.
Neve scored eight in the third quarter to give the Cougars some separation.
Brant Graham scored 11 for West (6-7, 2-2). Jalen Moten had 10. Graham, Moten and Caleb Queen accounted for the Falcons’ three 3-pointers.
