SALISBURY — Catawba’s women’s basketball team struggled in a 74-64 loss to Lenoir-Rhyne on Wednesday.
The Indians (7-11, 5-8) got another major effort from Mary Spry (Carson), but it wasn’t enough. Catawba shot under 30 percent from the field and was 3-for-18 on 3-pointers. That wasn’t going to get it done against L-R, one of the top teams in the South Athletic Conference.
Lenoir-Rhyne (15-4, 11-2) didn’t play great, shooting 35.7 percent, but the Bears did make eight 3-pointers.
Spry scored 23 points, with 7-for-13 from the field and 9-for-10 from the foul line. She had six rebounds and two blocks.
The rest of Catawba’s double-figure scoring came from the bench, as Sheree Gidney scored 11 and Julie Janus had 10.
Abigail Brown scored 17 to lead four Bears in double figures.
Lauren Arnold (West Rowan) started for the Bears. She only scored five points, but she had a team-high nine rebounds in 16 minutes of action.
The 282 fans who gathered at Goodman Arena watched a lot of whistles and a lot of free throws. The Bears were 26-for-36 from the foul line, while the Indians were 23-for-26.
Catawba’s game at Lincoln Memorial has been moved up from Saturday to Friday afternoon due to weather concerns.
