Championships: 4 (2000, 2011, 2013, 2015)
Lean years: The Cavaliers experienced an 0-6 drought from 2006-08 and went 1-2 four straight seasons from 2016-19.
North’s presence was strongest in the tournament in the seasons when Andrew Mitchell was coaching. He coached the 2011, 2013 and 2015 championship teams. North’s boys have not won a Moir title since 2015.
All-time Moir team (2000-24):
Pierre Givens — He’s the captain. He gets the nod over the other 3 MVPs for his 60-point tournament in 2011. He scored 23 in a great championship game, a 60-59 victory against Davie.
Jalen Sanders — He was Moir MVP in 2015 when the Cavaliers won against a strong field, beating Davie in the semis and Mooresville in the title game. Sanders scored 23 in the championship game.
Joe Scott — Scott made the difference for the Cavaliers in that 2015 semifinal with Davie by pumping in 32 points. He scored 66 in the tournament, 10 more than Sanders.
Emari Russell — He put up 67 points as North won two out of three Moir games in 2024 with outings of 22-23-22.
Michael Bowman and Marcus Lawing — They were Moir MVPs in 2013 and 2000, respectively, as much for their defense and rebounding as their scoring. In both of those tournaments, the Cavaliers only played two games, so they didn’t get a chance to pile up typical MVP stats. Bowman scored 19 as North handled Carson in the 2013 final. Lawing produced two double-digit Moir games for a terrific 2000 team that had a host of exceptional players, including two East-West All-Stars.
Honorable Mention: North went 1-2 in 2017 and 2018, but Dayjuwon Cooke was super with 57 points in 2017 and 60 in 2018. … Future NFL star Javon Hargrave was always tough in the Moir, scoring in double figures seven times. … Sam Starks racked up 53 points as North won two out of three in 2008. … Bryson Gaymon had impressive efforts in 2006 and 2007, but they came in losses. … Tristan Rankin averaged 18 points as the Cavaliers split two games in 2002. … Henderson Lentz came back from nearly dying and had a 25-point Moir game. He’s still one of the best stories of the century.
