Tobias “Toby” Hampson
What makes you the best candidate to serve as NC Court of Appeals for Seat 2.
I have served on the NC Court of Appeals for the last 7.5 years. For 24 years, I’ve served as a judge, a lawyer specializing in appeals and as a law clerk. I have handled just about every kind of case that the court hears. I am, at this point, the only State Bar-certified specialist in handling appeals serving on our N.C. Court of Appeals. On the court, I have authored over 400 majority opinions in civil and criminal cases. We need judges on the Court of Appeals that have this real, hands-on experience dealing with all the kinds of cases that the court hears.
What would you point to in your past as the greatest example of why you are running and would like to hold this seat for the upcoming term?
Last year, I authored a dissenting opinion in Griffin v. N.C. State Bd. of Elections where I wrote that the rules of an election should not be changed after the election to try and change the result of that election in a case which could have resulted in over 68,000 ballots being challenged without evidence any of those voters were ineligible to vote-including early voters and overseas voters, including military members serving abroad. Ultimately, a federal judge agreed with me. I’m running because we need judges that will stand up for the Rule of Law and who will work to make sure our justice system is working for the people.
As a NC Court of Appeals Judge for Seat 2, what would your priorities be?
- Restoring and maintaining public confidence in our courts
- Working to defend the Rule of Law and to remove the politicization of our courts
- Making sure we provide access to justice and a fair shake to everyone
