LANDIS — Landis’ top law man, Police Chief Matthew Geelen, is stepping away from his role with the town.
In a Thursday evening press release, Town Manager Michael Ambrose indicated that Geelen, the police chief and capital projects coordinator for Landis, was taking a town manager position in Pilot Mountain.
Ambrose congratulated Geelen in the release for the appointment to his new role and wished him the best.
“Nearly three years ago, I had the opportunity to hire Chief Geelen,” Ambrose said. “During his time with the Town of Landis, I supported his professional development by encouraging him to pursue advanced training and gain valuable experience that would help prepare him for future leadership opportunities. Chief Geelen shared his goal of one day serving as a Town Manager, and I was proud to support him in achieving that objective.”
According to the release, Geelen will remain employed with the Town of Landis through July 24 to aid with the transition.
In the release, Ambrose addressed speculation about why Landis had not publicized the departure ahead of Pilot Mountain’s announcement that Geelen was joining the administration there.
“I would like to clarify that we were not officially advised until the Town of Pilot Mountain was preparing to announce the appointment on its social media platforms,” Ambrose said. “It is always rewarding to see members of our organization grow professionally and achieve the goals they have set for themselves. While we certainly will miss Chief Geelen, we are proud of his accomplishments and wish him continued success in this new role.
“Congratulations again, Chief Geelen, and best wishes as you begin this exciting new chapter in your career.”
Ambrose indicated that he would provide additional information regarding the appointment of an interim police chief and update the timeline for that transition soon.
