SALISBURY – Rowan County’s Lady Legion softball team swept a doubleheader on Wednesday night against Lincoln County.
Rowan won 2-1 and 7-2 in a pair of five-inning games played at Catawba’s Whitley Field.
Ansley Jenkins had a super doubleheader. She went 4-for-4 at the plate and was the winning pitcher in the first game.
Reese Poole and Raney Phelps played on the championship team in the State Games in Greensboro, but they were able to arrive in time for the Legion doubleheader. They got into the first game as subs and were standouts in the second game.
“We played really well and we had to because Lincoln has a strong team with girls from East Lincoln, North Lincoln and West Lincoln,” Rowan head coach Jason Kluttz said. “We made the routine plays in the field and we also made some special ones where the girls got to show their athleticism.”
Both teams scored in the third inning in the first game. Phelps knocked in the first run for Rowan. Jenkins had the hit that broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth. Lily Kluttz and Kayla Burns scored the runs.
Camryn Perkins allowed six hits in three innings, but limited the damage to one run. Jenkins took over in the circle in the fourth and pitched two scoreless innings. She walked two, but didn’t allow any hits.
