CONCORD – Robinson’s boys track team finished second to West Cabarrus in last week’s Cabarrus County Championships, but the the 5A Bulldogs were impressive, outscoring a lot of 5A and 7A schools.
It was no surprise that Robinson won Wednesday’s South Piedmont Conference Championships with relative ease. The Bulldogs totaled 153.5 points with a 10-8-7-5-4-3-2-1 scoring system that rewarded eight places. Northwest Cabarrus, third in the Cabarrus Champions, finished second in the SPC with 103 points.
Rowan County champion West Rowan totaled 87 points and edged Concord by a half-point for third place.
The league’s other Rowan schools finished fifth, sixth, seven and eighth. That was East (80), Carson (71), Salisbury (65) and South Rowan (43).
Robinson’s Demonte Barr swept the hurdling events. Robinson’s Cameron Tucker won the 200 and 400 meter runs. Jaidyn Covington claimed the shot put for the Bulldogs.
Robinson got its sixth win in the 4×400 relay that concluded the meet.
Northwest Cabarrus also won a relay, taking the 4×200. The Trojans got individual wins from Mason Short in the pole vault; Landon Hunter in the long jump, and Julian Williams in the triple jump.
Concord had an individual winner in high jumper Kyzen Coleman.
The individual Rowan standout was Carson senior Eric Gillis. Gillis won the 800, 1600 and 3200. He ran a 4:20.37 that met the Mile Split elite standard in the 1600.
Gillis also ran on the second-place 4×800 team. Carson’s Konnor Karriker clearned the bar at 6 feet for second in the high jump.
West got an individual win from Cameron Young in the discus.
The Falcons won the 4×800 with Jayden Romero, Luke Henson, Ben Woodward and Jonathan Medina.
The Falcons edged the Hornets for second in the 4×200 and placed third in the 4×100. Second place in the 4×400 elevated the Falcons to third place in the final team scores.
Dillon Smith was second in the long jump. Jacob Kirk placed third and fourth in the hurdling events. Romero ran a PR for third in the 3200. Luke Henson was fourth in the 1600.
Most of East’s impact was in the field events, with multiple Mustangs in the top five in the high jump, pole vault and shot put.
Joshua Carlton, Zaiden Cornwell tied for third in the high jump, while Dallas Rollings placed fifth.
Carlton had a strong meet for the Mustangs. He was third in the long jump.
East went 3-4-5 in the pole vault with Oliver Shank, Kaleo Tolentino and Carlton.
The Mustangs got a second in the shot put from Darrell Shrewsbury and a fourth from Bryson Ware.
Salisbury made an impact in the sprints. Qua’Zair Delee won the 100, with Christion McNeely placing third.
McNeely was second to Robinson’s Tucker in the 200, while Delee was third. While they didn’t win the event, both Hornets ran elite times.
The Hornets won the 4×100 with a unit of Delee, McNeely, Ephraim Williams and Jaylin Johnson.
Samuel Fatovic was fifth in a fast 400 – four runners ran under 50 seconds – but he placed second to Gillis in the 800 meters.
South’s Kamden Rowell was second in the pole vault (12-6). Ethan Overby was third in the 1600 and fourth in the 800.
Kaiden Fisher was third in the 100 hurdles. Logan Keasler was fourth in the 3200.
