BOWIE, Md. — Hannah Wilkerson (North Rowan) made her last college shot, swishing a 3-pointer.
Wilkerson transferred to Bowie State for her senior year and contributed frequently to a strong team that won the Northern Division of the CIAA.
Wilkerson set school records at Columbia International, a small NAIA program, when she was a freshman, scoring 522 points.
When her coach left Columbia International to tackle a rebuilding job at D-II Clarion in Pennsylvania, Wilkerson headed north as well, looking forward to Pennsylvania and to a more challenging level of competition.
Wilkerson was good for Clarion for two seasons and helped revive the program, scoring 235 points for a weak team and then 210 for a much stronger one.
She had totaled 967 college points when she arrived at Bowie State and scored her 1,000th point for the Bulldogs in December.
Wilkerson said she made the move to Bowie State mostly because of the post-graduation job opportunities that will be available for her in the Washington D.C. area.
Wilkerson’s senior season was detoured on Feb. 5 when she suffered an MCL tear in the game with Elizabeth City State.
She was not expected to be able to play again, but she made it on to the court for Bowie State’s Senior Night on Feb. 21 and swished her last college shot in the win against Lincoln with a number of family members in attendance.
She scored 94 points this season.
Wilkerson was not able to play in the CIAA Tournament held in Baltimore, but she’ll still have good memories from her time at Bowie State.
Wilkerson scored 1,589 points for North Rowan despite losing half a season to COVID.
