CONCORD — The NCHSAA’s 23rd annual Cheerleading Invitational was held on Friday at Cabarrus Arena & Events Center.
The event had been rescheduled and relocated after a kitchen fire at the Raleigh Convention Center forced a postponement.
Participants included Carson, South Rowan and East Rowan.
Schools of 1A-4A size are classified as D2 in cheerleading. Schools of 5A-8A size are classified as D1.
There are a host of divisions. South and Carson won their divisions and are state champs.
The biggest winners were Weddington, which won the Tar Heel Trophy for best performance in the Game Day Division — “Gameday” routines focus on traditional crowd leading skills — and Wakefield, which won the Carolina Cup as the top varsity team overall.
Carson won in the four-team Small Varsity DI Gameday Division. Carson outscored Middle Creek, Ashbrook and Garner.
East Rowan was fourth in the five-team Small Varsity D1 Division. Cardinal Gibbons won that division and was followed by Davie, Cleveland, East and Swansboro.
South Rowan won the four-team Small Varsity D2 Non-tumbling Division. South outscored Midway, Southside and Henderson Collegiate.
East’s Lacey Mastro was one of the eight $500 scholarship winners.
