Following the deadly shooting in Minneapolis on Wednesday, community organizers in Salisbury are planning a rally at Bell Tower Green for the deceased.
Scott Huffman, a Democratic candidate for District 76 of the North Carolina House of Representatives, said in a Thursday phone call that after seeing the footage from Minneapolis on Wednesday, he knew he had to do something.
During that Wednesday incident, Renee Nicole Good, 37, was shot multiple times by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. Statements from the Trump administration indicated that Good was attempting to run over the officer that discharged his weapon. Witnesses at the scene said she was trying to comply with orders to leave the area.
What the many videos do make clear is that the agent fired into the car and that Good was struck and killed.
Huffman decried the violence and said that he wants Thursday’s event to be an opportunity for the community to come together and talk about it.
“I am hoping clergy will show up and talk about this,” Huffman said. “We will have a moment of silence for Renee.
“… Last night I got motivated to put together a vigil. I have had good positive feedback. I hope people will show up. We will talk about the fact that Renee was a mother and wife and that now her child is an orphan.”
The event takes place at Bell Tower Green in downtown Salisbury at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8.
