Record in Moir tournament from 2000-2024: 34-28
Championships: 4 (2012, 2019, 2022, 2023)
From 2003 to 2023, the Falcons won at least one Moir game every year.
Lean years: The Falcons had their struggles in the Moir in some years when they had really good seasons otherwise. They were 2-6 in the Moir in the Hillary Hampton years and 5-7 in the Moir in the Khaila Hall years.
West won tournaments with a bye, plus two victories, in 2012 and 2022 and went 3-0 in the event in 2019 and 2023. West has been 2-1 in the Moir seven times since 2000. Most of those 2-1 showings were in the 2006-11 era that featured Ayana Avery and Shay Steele.
All-time Moir team (2000-24):
Abigail Wilson — She’s the captain. Wilson was a terrific player in the Moir, 62 points as a sophomore in 2017, 63 points as a junior in 2018 and an impressive 82 points as a senior in 2019 to lift the Falcons to a championship. She was an easy MVP choice in 2019. Throw in the 32 Moir points Wilson scored as a freshman, and she totaled 239 points in 12 games in the event.
Lauren Arnold — Arnold often was the best player on West’s back-to-back state championship teams and was a two-time Moir MVP in 2022 and 2023. In 2022, West won the tournament as easily as you possibly can win it. Salisbury didn’t participate that year and the Falcons won their two Moir games by 79-14 and 72-30. Arnold was in double figures in all of her Moir games in 2022 and 2023.
Shay Steele — Steele had a really good tournament in 2011, scoring 55 points in three games. She was Moir MVP in 2012, scoring 41 points in the Falcons’ wins over Davie and Salisbury.
Ayana Avery — Avery wasn’t amazing in Moir tournaments, but, not suprisingly, she was good. She scored 146 points in 11 games and her teams were 7-4 in the event.
Hillary Hampton —Hampton only got to play in eight Moir games, but she scored 135 points, almost 17 per game. She averaged 23 points in the 2001 tournament.
Honorable Mention: In her six Moir games in 2015 and 2016, Egypt Alexander scored 99 points. … Olivia Izze probably had the two best games of her career in the 2007 Moir and helped the Falcons win twice. … Khaila Hall scored 53 points in the 2014 tournament.
