Championships: 6 (2001, 2002, 2005, 2014, 2016, 2022)
Lean years: Mike Gurley didn’t coach very many bad teams. The Falcons have been winless in the tournament just three times in this century — 2003, 2009 and 2012.
West won Moir tournaments with a bye, plus two victories, in 2001, 2002 and 2005 and 2022 and went 3-0 in 2014 and 2016. In addition to the titles, West has been 2-1 in four Moir events since 2000.
With 6 different Moir MVPs since 2000, it’s possible to construct an all-time West team with nothing but MVPs.
All-time Moir team (2000-24):
Caleb Mauldin — He’s the captain. He had an advantage over most of the other MVPs by getting to play a dozen Moir games and he was part of 2 championship teams. MVP in 2016 with 55 points in 3 games. He scored 64 in 3 games in 2017 and had a 32-point game in 2015. He helped West win the 2014 Moir title with solid outings as a freshman. He totaled 206 points in Moir games.
Jamel Carpenter — He was MVP with 2 strong games in 2005 and probably was even better in 2004 when he scored 66 points in three games, including a 33-p0int effort in an overtime loss to Davie. He scored 44 points in the 2006 tournament.
Donte Minter — Minter was MVP in 2001 for a pair of 21-point efforts and scored 51 in 3 games for the runner-up Falcons in 2000.
Junior Hairston — He was in double figures three straight games in the 2000 tournament and scored 37 points in 2 games as a senior in 2002 to take home MVP honors.
Celexus Long and Kayvone Norman — They were MVPs in 2014 and 2022, respectively, as leaders for well-balanced teams. Long scored 14 in the 2014 championship game to help beat East Rowan in a wide-open tournament in which the top seeds bowed out early. Norman scored 17 in the 2022 championship game to lead the Falcons past Carson in Dadrian Cuthbertson’s first season as head coach.
Honorable Mention: Greg Joseph scored only 2 points in the 2014 semifinals, but he had 18 in the first round and 18 in the championship game. … KJ Sherrill had good tournaments in 2006 (44 points) and 2007 (48 points). … Keshun Sherrill put up 67 points in the 2011 Moir, but the Falcons only won one of their 3 games.
