SALISBURY — The Dale’s Sporting Goods Sam Moir Christmas Classic is set for Dec. 27, 29 and 30 at Catawba College’s Goodman Gym.
This will be the 53rd tournament.
They’ll skip the 28th, as that’s a Sunday.
The entries will include the girls and boys basketball teams from Carson, Salisbury, North Rowan, West Rowan, East Rowan, South Rowan, Central Davidson and A.L. Brown.
A.L. Brown returns to the tournament after a brief hiatus. Mount Pleasant was in the event last season.
New head coaches in the event will be North Rowan boys coach Herb Liles, North Rowan girls coach Jarvis Miller, A.L. Brown boys coach Lance Lewis and Central Davidson girls coach Kyle Nanney.
The field will be seeded based on pre-Christmas records. Seeds and pairings will be announced once pre-Christmas activity is finished. If teams have the same record, head-to-head will be used as a tiebreaker. If teams are tied and did not play each other, administrators will conduct a coin flip.
West Rowan’s girls have bounced back this season with the return of Tiara Thompson and are off to a 4-0 start. The Falcons won only two games all last season. South Rowan (4-1) is off to its best start in over a decade. East Rowan’s girls are the defending champs. All the girls teams have won at least one game.
The Salisbury, Carson and Central Davidson boys teams are still undefeated at this point. Salisbury is the defending champion. The Hornets beat the Cougars in the final last season. All the boys teams have won at least one game. East (3-2) and South (2-3) already have surpassed last season’s win totals.
