FAYETTEVILLE — Fayetteville State’s football team scored a touchdown with five seconds left in the first half that proved to be a backbreaker for Livingstone in Saturday’s CIAA action.
The end-of-the-half score gave the Broncos a 21-7 lead, and they put the Blue Bears away in the third quarter for a 38-14 victory at Nick Jeralds Stadium.
Livingstone scored first for a 7-0 lead on a 1-yard run by QB Elijah Alexander, but Fayetteville State (4-3, 4-0) built a 35-7 advantage before the Bears could score again.
Livingstone (3-3, 2-2) put together a 75-yard drive in the fourth quarter, capped by a 1-yard plunge by Caleb Stokes. Javen Parker’s 53-yard run set up the touchdown.
Fayetteville State’s defense was the dominant unit, stifling Livingstone’s running game, except for one big play, and piling up seven sacks and 11 tackles for loss.
Livingstone defensive lineman Kenyon Garner turned in another phenomenal effort with 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.
Livingstone will look to bounce back at Winston-Salem State next Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
