Rowan Public Library has expanded its multilingual materials collection, adding new Ukrainian and Chinese titles to better serve the county’s diverse community of readers.
The new items include fiction, nonfiction and young adult selections. Some of the items are popular titles recently released in Ukrainian and Chinese, while others highlight stories, history and perspectives unique to Ukraine and China.
“Libraries are for everyone, and we are committed to making sure our shelves reflect the needs and interests of the people who use them,” Rowan Public Library Technical Services Supervisor Lyndsey Maloney said. “These additions provide opportunities for native speakers to enjoy reading in their first language, while also giving English-speaking patrons the chance to explore other cultures through literature.”
The expansion reflects a growing demand for multilingual materials in Rowan County. In recent years, the library has added resources in Spanish, as well as promoting the use of language learning tools such as Transparent Language. The library wanted to begin to expand the multilingual materials collection to ensure that all residents can find books that resonate with them.
“As a selector, I love the idea that I can find the perfect book for any patron. Having books and other materials in another language welcomes a community that can be better served by their public library. I want to see our multilingual collection continue to grow,” said Amanda Brill, who assisted in ordering titles for this collection.
Customers can borrow the new Ukrainian and Chinese titles from any Rowan Public Library location. Users can also place items on hold for pickup at their preferred location.
