Rowan County Veterans Services is inviting residents to honor veterans and active-duty service members during its annual Deck the Hall event on Nov. 20, where community members will bring a special ornament to be placed on the Veterans Service Christmas Tree.
The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, at the Rowan County Veterans Services office in the Rowan Community Center, formerly West End Plaza, at 1935 Jake Alexander Boulvevard West in Salisbury.
The community event provides an opportunity for veterans, family members and friends to honor those who have served and those who are currently serving in the United States military. Residents are encouraged to bring an ornament to place on the tree in honor or memory of a veteran or active-duty service member who has made a meaningful impact on their lives.
Last year, community members helped decorate the tree with ornaments honoring loved ones who served or are currently serving in the nation’s military. Participants received a name tag for each ornament identifying the veteran or active-duty service member and branch of service represented. They also had the option to donate the ornament for display in future years or pick it up after Jan. 2.
“Each ornament gave veterans, family members and friends an opportunity to share their service stories,” said Deidre Stewart (formerly Powell), Rowan County Veterans Services Technician. “Some brought laughter, while others brought tears. The Veterans Services team of Shery Mendez (formerly Bridges), Justan Mounts, Carrie Foster, Barry Cartner and I are honored by the support shown by those who participated and donated ornaments with the excitement of knowing they would be displayed year after year. Deck the Hall gives our community an opportunity to come together, remember those who served and, most importantly, show appreciation for the veterans and military families who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for our country.”
Deck the Hall is designed to foster public appreciation for veterans, strengthen community involvement, and support the well-being of service members and their families. The event offers an opportunity to share stories, reflect on military service and sacrifice, and create a meaningful holiday display that represents those who have worn the uniform.
Light refreshments will be served and Veteran attendees will receive a free raffle tickets for a special gift.
The Veterans Services Christmas Tree is located inside the Rowan County Veterans Services office at the Rowan Community Center. The office aids veterans and their families with benefits, claims assistance, referrals and other support services. The location serves as a resource hub for local veterans and their families while helping connect them with the programs and services they have earned through military service.
