The Salisbury branch of the English Speaking Union are set to host Dr. Patrick Giamario for his talk “Political Satire Under Fire.”
The recent hullabaloo over late night hosts Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel and their brand of political satire has raised questions over what role such satire plays in our political ecosphere. What is the history of such public mockery? How has it evolved over the centuries? And despite the right to needle politicians being enshrined in the First Amendment, it is actually effective, beneficial or harmful?
Dr. Patrick Giamario is an associate professor in the UNCG Department of Political Science, has written a book on the topic and will provide some interesting insights.
The talk and dinner will be at the Country Club of Salisbury on Thursday, Oct. 15 at 6:30 p.m. Those interested in attending can contact Gerry Wood at 704-213-6008 by Oct. 12. Dinner reservations for members cost $60, for non-members $80.
