KANNAPOLIS — The new Kannapolis Police Chief Chris Hill took the ceremonial oath of office on Oct. 12.
Surrounded by his family, Hill took the oath of office officiated by City Clerk Pam Scaggs. Hill officially took over the office on Sept. 30, so the City Council oath was primarily ceremonial. Members of the Kannapolis Police Department filled the City Council chambers to celebrate Hill.
Hill most recently served as deputy police chief, a role he assumed in 2024. He has been with the KPD for 17 years serving in roles from patrol officer to investigator to captain.
“I am excited to lead the men and women of this agency as we continue to build upon the great reputation of the Kannapolis Police Department. I love the Kannapolis community and look forward to continuing working with community members to advance our goals of building bridges with residents and business owners. Proactively working together allows us to communicate and collaborate as our city evolves,” Hill said.
After taking the oath, Hill received a standing ovation from the crowd.
Originally from Russell, N.Y., Hill graduated from the State University of New York at Canton with an associate degree in criminal justice and bachelor of technology degree in criminal investigation. He later received a master of science in criminal justice and certificate in public management and leadership from East Carolina University.
He also earned the advanced law enforcement certification from the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission. Additionally, he graduated from the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Association training program and the 98th session of the Police Executive Research Forum’s Senior Management Institute for Police.
In 2014, the KPD honored him with the Roger Dale Carter Memorial Service award. He has also received two-unit commendations and a safe driving award.
Hill and his family are active members of the Coddle Creek ARP Church. He has also completed the Cabarrus Chamber Leadership Program and volunteered with Ducks Unlimited to support wetland conservation and local schools.
