HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER
CONCORD — The Salisbury Hornets suffered a 5-2 road loss to Northwest Cabarrus on Thursday night despite jumping out to an early two-goal lead.
Salisbury falls to 15-2-2 on the season.
The Hornets came out aggressively and took a 2-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes.
Salisbury’s first goal came from Kevin Reyes applying pressure to the Northwest Cabarrus goalkeeper. The goalkeeper’s attempted clearance struck Reyes, and the ball ricocheted into the path of Carlos Cruz, who finished the opportunity for his second career goal with the Hornets.
Salisbury quickly added a second goal off a set piece. Reyes played a short free kick out wide to Henry Austin, who delivered a dangerous cross into the penalty area. A Northwest Cabarrus defender inadvertently headed the ball into his own net, giving the Hornets a two-goal advantage.
Northwest Cabarrus responded by earning two penalty kicks in the first half, converting both opportunities to level the match at 2-2 heading into halftime.
The second half saw Salisbury control possession for extended stretches and create opportunities to regain the lead. However, Northwest Cabarrus found the breakthrough approximately 15 minutes after the restart, using a long ball over the top to get behind the Salisbury backline and take a 3-2 lead.
The hosts extended their advantage shortly afterward by converting a third penalty kick. Northwest Cabarrus added its fifth goal with less than 15 minutes remaining, again capitalizing on a long ball over the top to complete the scoring at 5-2.
Despite the result, Salisbury showed attacking intent throughout the match, particularly during stretches of second-half possession. The Hornets will look to regroup and respond as they prepare for their upcoming Senior Night on Tuesday against Carson.
Coach Landon Goodman emphasized the importance of learning from the result and turning the team’s attention toward the next challenge.
