HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS
South Piedmont Conference schools announced qualifiers for the upcoming individual regionals.
Some advanced via seeding, based on their regular season, and some made it through a pre-regional match on Monday.
Salisbury will have five girls in 4A regional action, with Macy Jones competing in singles and Gabbi Fatovic-Anna Kate Goodman and Campbell Aron-Jillian Jarrell competing in doubles.
• South Rowan’s Ava Nail will compete in 4A singles while Kayleigh Draughn-Addison Farmer will compete in doubles.
Draughn and Farmer won a three-hour match in Monday’s pre-regional action.
• East Rowan’s Katelyn Overcash and Ella Powers will compete in 5A singles.
• Carson’s Reagan Bradshaw and Morgan Hall will compete in 5A singles. Annabell Melton-Caylee Sheets and Brooklyn Johnson-Braylee Johnson will compete in doubles.
• West Rowan’s Olyvia Brown and Lucy Moore will compete in 5A singles. West’s teams of Finley Vanwassenhove-Aaliyah Cosntantino and Chloe Vanwassenhove-Brynlee Campbell qualified in doubles.
Individual regionals are set for Oct. 16-17.

HIGH SCHOOL BOYS SOCCER
SPENCER — North Rowan beat South Stanly 6-4 in overtime on Monday in Yadkin Valley Conference action.
The Cavaliers (4-11-1, 3-3) got two goals from Joshua Reyes and one from Aarath Velasquez, Samuel Doblado Diaz, Jonathan Lopez and JP Perez.
Bryan Napoles made 10 saves.
North had to overcome a hat trick by South Stanly’s Johns Martinez.

HUNTERSVILLE — South Rowan battled to a 1-all tie at Hopewell in non-conference action on Monday.
Matthew Nava-Arellano converted a penalty kick for South (5-9-4). Alfredo Bautista made eight saves.
COLLEGE VOLLEYBALL
Catawba senior Riley Hill (East Rowan) ranks first in the South Atlantic Conference in digs per set, averaging 4.65.
COLLEGE GOLF
Host Catawba won the three-round Rendleman Invitational at the Country Club of Salisbury.
The Indians shot 3-under for the event to edge Sandhills Community College.
Pfeiffer placed third. The Falcons were led by Tyler Kepley (West Rowan). He 2-under in Round 3, finished 4-over for the event and tied for 10th.

Brady McIntyre (East Rowan) helped Lenoir-Rhyne win the Wolves Fall Intercollegiate.
McIntyre shot 2-under 70 in the final round and finished ninth at 2-over 218.
PRO BASEBALL
Vance Honeycutt (Salisbury, UNC) is playing for the Peoria Javelinas in the Arizona Fall League.
Honeycutt, a Baltimore Orioles prospect, hit a home run on Monday that traveled 106.9 mph. He stole a base and made a running catch in center field.
FLAG FOOTBALL
East Rowan had a big win on Monday, beating Robinson 29-0.
The surging Mustangs have emerged as the most successful team in Rowan County and are in first place in the South Piedmont Conference.
OBITS
Dub Leazer, who started the Mooresville Dragway in the 1960s, one of the pioneers of what became Race City, died at 96 on Sept. 27.
• Corey Jemal Horton, well-known sportswriter in the area, died at 57 on Sept. 26 from diabetes and complications from the disease.
Horton had most recently covered Cabarrus County athletics as the sports editor of the Independent Tribune. He had worked previously for the Charlotte Observer.
• Steve Moore, a 1964 West Rowan graduate, died on Sept. 22 at 79. A 1968 East Carolina graduate, he taught and coached a number of sports in Pitt County for more than 40 years.
