KANNAPOLIS — A Kannapolis police officer shot and killed an apparently armed man on Friday who appeared in the commission of a carjacking.
At approximately 11:40 a.m, Kannapolis Police received a 911 call reporting a man firing a gun on South Main Street near Bell Street.
As officers neared the scene, they reportedly witnessed a man holding a gun, allegedly attempting to carjack a vehicle at the intersection of South Main Street and Bethpage Road.
The suspect was shot by officers during the ensuing incident. The suspect was taken to Atrium Health Cabarrus where he succumbed to his injuries. No officers were injured.
The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol pending an internal review of the incident. The SBI has been called to assist with the investigation per standard procedures.
South Main Street, from Dale Earnhardt Boulevard to Rankin Street, is closed at this time as the investigation continues.
