KANNAPOLIS — The City of Kannapolis identified the man who was shot and killed by police on Friday during the alleged commission of a carjacking.
Lorenzo Devonte Gray, 33, of Kannapolis, died after being taken to Atrium Cabarrus for treatment of injuries sustained during the shooting. According to reports from the scene, at approximately 11:40 a.m., Kannapolis Police received a 911 call regarding a report of a man firing a gun on South Main Street near Bell Street.
As officers neared the scene, they reportedly witnessed Gray holding a gun and allegedly attempting to carjack vehicles. Reports indicate that Gray was subsequently struck by the officers’ gunfire during the incident.
No officers were injured as a result of the encounter. Two officers, Lt. Justin Smith and Sgt. Matthew Hoehman, have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol pending an internal review of the incident.
The release from the city that provided the update on the incident indicated that no additional information would be released as the State Bureau of Invesigation continues its investigation per standard procedures.
