SALISBURY — Fire crews responded to a large structure fire at the 2100 building at the Grand on Julian off Grandeur Drive around 7 p.m. on Saturday, June 6.
All residents were accounted for within the first 15 minutes of crews on scene, according to Deputy Chief of Rowan County Emergency Services Allysson Summitt. Initial reports from the scene indicated that people were jumping from the building, but Summitt confirmed that all civilian injuries were non-life-threatening and did not require EMS transport from the scene.
The fire occurred in the South Salisbury fire district, but over 100 fire personnel from Rowan County and surrounding counties responded to the scene. Summitt reported that one firefighter was treated by EMS on the scene and transported with non-life-threatening injuries as of 9:30 p.m.
The Red Cross was present at the scene to assist with residents’ needs, including child care and temporary shelter. Summitt estimates roughly 60 residents live in each of the buildings at the complex, but a final headcount of those displaced by the fire has not been released.
No details about the cause of the fire have been reported, and crews are likely unable to enter the affected building to assess it until Sunday, June 7, at the earliest.
This is a developing story that will be updated as more information becomes available.
