WILMINGTON – Rowan County won 13-12 in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader against Wilmington Post 10 Red.
Luke Ponczka had three hits and was the winning pitcher. Ponczka got the last out in the bottom of the fifth with the score tied at 9-all and was the beneficiary of Rowan’s decisive four-run top of the sixth.
Rowan trailed 4-1 going to the fourth inning but put together a six-run inning that included two hits by Ponczka.
Carter Durant and Cole Blevins had doubles. Drew Pegram had a two-run single in the decisive sixth.
Rowan had 10 hits and walked eight times, including four free passes issued to Blevins.
Blevins, Ponczka, Brant Graham, Brody Pope and Jayven Parks scored two runs each.
Maddox Moore, Jacob Prevette and Connor Park pitched before Ponczka was able to get the last seven outs. Rowan hurlers walked six and struck out six.
Rowan won despite committing three errors. Wilmington had 15 hits.
Wilmington’s Jonah Campbell had the game’s only homer, a disputed one, in the bottom of the sixth. Rowan head coach Seth Graham argued that the drive was foul.
