A male motorist is dead following a Sunday morning incident on Interstate 85.
Rowan County Emergency Services Deputy Chief Allyson Summitt confirmed that around 9 a.m., a single vehicle collision involving a truck occurred at the Yadkin River bridge section of I-85.
The initial call was receive at 9:08 a.m. Rowan County departments were dispatched to the scene.
At some point, the motorist exited the vehicle. Witnesses reported that they saw the ma go over to the edge of the bridge. It’s unclear what happened next, but what is confirmed is that the man ended up in the river below.
Millers Ferry and partnering agencies including the Rescue Squad, Salisbury Fire, Emergency Management, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office, Iredell County Sheriff’s Office and Davidson County Sheriff’s office worked to clear the scene and retrieve the man from the river.
The man’s body was ultimately pulled from the water but he did not survive.
“The agencies worked together and got on the water working quickly to locate this individual and bring closure to the family,” Summitt said.
As a result of the crash and clean up, traffic was severly impacted on Interstate 85 for several hours on Sunday.
