ASHEBORO – Under-the-weather Salisbury senior Sam Goodman played an eventful round of golf on Tuesday.
Goodman was the medalist for the 4A Central Regional held at Asheboro Country Club, a challenging course laden with bunkers, a lake, towering oaks and taller pines.
Goodman was five shots off the pace at the turn, but then he got hot. He finished at 3-over 74 and won the regional going away – by four shots. He fired a torrid 34 on the back side, including a birdie on No. 18.
“Sam was pretty sick Monday and Tuesday and we didn’t know if he’d even be able to play,” SHS coach Josh Brincefield said. “It was like the Michael Jordan Flu Game.”
The standout hole for Goodman was the 11th, a 340-yard par 4. Goodman drove the green with a titanic drive and then made a putt for eagle.
While Goodman qualified for the 4A State Championships as an individual, Salisbury finished third in the team scoring and only the top two teams from each regional head to state.
North Surry had two golfers with 78s and won the regional with a 322 score. Lake Norman Charter shot 323 for second place.
Other scores for the Hornets were posted by John McCoy (83), Bryant Davis (89), Nolt Lescoe (90) and James Brincefield (91).
The top four count toward the team score. That put the Hornets third at 336.
South Rowan placed fourth at 340. South junior Dane Wheeler shot 78, was part of the tie for second place and will represent the Raiders as an individual in the state tournament.
The 36-hole state tournament is set for May 11-12 at Longleaf in Southern Pines.
