The man charged with killing a 20-year-old and a 19-year-old while driving drunk Friday had his bond raised to $5 million in a court appearance on Tuesday.
According to publicly available court documents, the state, represented by Assistant District Attorney Caleb Newman, requested presiding judge Chris Sease to reconsider the bond originally issued to 37-year-old Juan Alvarado Aguilar.
The change also comes after Immigrations and Custom Enforcement issued a detainer for Aguilar after being notified by a Rowan County Magistrate that Aguilar possessed a Mexico passport and the magistrate could not verify citizenship or legal residency.
Aguilar has been charged with two counts of felony causing death by a motor vehicle, driving while intoxicated, traveling left of the center line and driving while his license was revoked after he was accused of causing a crash near the Iredell County line that left 20-year-old Fletcher Mark Daniel Harris, from Catawba, and 19-year-old Skylar Nichole Provenza, from Statesville, dead.
Aguilar was also charged with failure to appear related to another DWI case in Cabarrus County
Family and friends have described the two, who were in a relationship, as promising and well-loved members of their communities.
Harris was a student at Catawba College, where he also played on the soccer team.
“Our hearts are broken,” Catawba Head Men’s Soccer Coach Alex Morais said in a post by the college. “Fletcher was profoundly loved and will be missed by everyone in our program and community. We are committed to honoring his memory and ensuring his legacy lives on. His dedication, character and positivity left a lasting impact on all of us. He was a leader, a teammate and a true friend — someone who inspired everyone around him. We are grateful to everyone who has supported Fletcher’s family and friends during this difficult time. The response of love and support has been overwhelming and reflects the profound impact this incredible young man had on so many lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, and we will continue to support them in every way we can.”
Catawba College has started the Fletcher Harris Memorial Scholarship Fund, which can be found at www.catawba.edu/Harris.
According to her family, Provenza recently graduated in esthetics from Dermacademy and had committed to beginning her career at Datre Hair Co.
“She embodied beauty and simplicity. She loved all kinds of music, and being present with the people who meant the most to her. Being immersed in nature was one of her favorite experiences, and through her boyfriend, Fletcher, she grew a love for hiking. From the moment she met Fletcher, it was evident they were soulmates. Their love grew deeper daily; they spent their last moments together and now continue their journey eternally.
“She not only loved beauty, she also loved making people feel beautiful. Her future was bright. Skylar just graduated in Esthetics from Dermacademy and had committed to a position to begin her career at Datre Hair Co. Skylar had an unmatched talent of not only making others shine, but of bringing inner beauty to the surface,” Provenza’s family wrote in her obituary
