SALISBURY — Salisbury soccer honored long-time boys and girls soccer coach Matt Parrish on Thursday.
A host of soccer alumni watched the Hornets win 2-0 against South Rowan at Ludwig Stadium.
It would have been unseemly for the Hornets to lose on Parrish’s night, but the Raiders put up a fight.
Raymond Moscoso had an assist and a goal for the Hornets.
Alejandro Mercado scored the first goal 21 minutes into the match, with Moscoso assisting.
Finnegan Avery made a save on a penalty kick to protect the 1-0 lead.
Salisbury (15-0-5, 10-0-2) made it 2-0 when Moscoso scored in the 28th minute.
The teams battled though a scoreless second half.
Avery posted his 43rd career shutout, adding to school and county records.
South is 2-13-1 and 2-9-1.

CHIINA GROVE — Carson got goals from Carlos Moctezuma and Carson Kirk to beat East Rowan 2-1 in overtime.
The Cougars (9-9, 5-7) beat the Mustangs (9-8-1, 4-8) for the second time in South Piedmont Conference play.
It’s been a season of close losses for the Mustangs. East has lost two overtime games this week.

CONCORD — Robinson won 5-2 against West Rowan on Thursday.
The Bulldogs pulled away late.
William Marquez-Hernandez scored two goals for the Bulldogs (11-7-1, 8-3-1).
Gabriel Tavira scored for the Falcons, who are still trying for their first win, and assisted on a goal by Zack Ortega.
Will Beecham assisted on Tavira’s goal.

Concord got goals from five different players and overwhelmed Northwest Cabarrus 5-0 in SPC action on Thursday to stay unbeaten in league play.
The second showdown between the Spiders (16-3-2, 11-0-1) and Hornets is scheduled for Oct. 23. They tied 1-1 on Sept. 30.
