WINSTON-SALEM — The Winston-Salem State Rams romped more easily than expected against Livingstone on Saturday, thrashing the Blue Bears 42-10.
It was a CIAA homecoming at Bowman Gray Stadium, so the Rams were spurred on by a vocal crowd estimated at 10,000 fans.
In addition to a lot of red-clad fans, Livingstone ran into an angry team that was ticked off about its dismal showing at Shaw the previous week.
Jayden Grimes had a 54-yard scoring run for the Rams a minute into the game, and it was 14-0 after four minutes. It was 28-3 at the half.
Livingstone trailed 35-3 before it scored its only TD.
Jason Zapata kicked a 41-yard field goal for the Blue Bears (3-4, 2-3). Alfredo Sotelo threw a 13-yard TD pass to Jamail Haizlip.
Javen Parker rushed for 77 yards to provide a lot of Livingstone’s offense. Zavion Lloyd made nine tackles for the Blue Bears, who lost their third in a row.
Winston-Salem State (4-4, 2-3) got 202 passing yards from Daylin Lee and 142 rushing yards from Jaquan Kelly while piling up more than 500 yards of relentless offense. The Rams rushed for 302 yards.
WSSU will lock horns with strong JC Smith next week, while Livingstone will host Virginia-Lynchburg in a non-conference game.
