THOMASVILLE — Salisbury opened the boys soccer season with a 2-0 win at East Davidson.
Sophomore Raymondo Moscoso scored unassisted in the first half for the Hornets’ first goal of the season.
Fletcher Busby found Abdul Eliwa with just under six minutes left to provide the final score.
Salisbury got excellent play from freshman Jaydn Newkirk, Alejandro Mercado Sanchez and keeper Finnegan Avery.
This is a big transition year for the Hornets, as Salisbury joins the South Piedmont Conference as one of two 4A teams (South Rowan) and the smallest school overall.
It also will be the final season for long-time coach Matt Parrish, who guided the Hornets to three state championships.
Coach Landon Goodman has directed much of the preseason as he prepares to assume head coaching duties beginning next fall.
“Overall it was a positive start for the squad against a familiar foe, but we will need to improve our fitness and cohesion to be successful in a difficult conference,” Parrish said. “It is hard to be better than 1-0 after our first match, but we have a lot to improve on.”
Up next is another non-conference match upon Monday at Mount Pleasant.
Salisbury had two matches canceled by opponents this week.
