GRANITE QUARRY — East Rowan wrestlers won their first and second round matches in the 5A dual team state playoffs on Tuesday.
Seeded fourth, the Mustangs won 42-38 against 13th-seeded Crest in the first round.
In the dual team playoffs, it’s common for teams to forfeit the remaining weight classes once victory is assured, rather than risk an injury, so sometimes match scores look closer than they actually were.
East got pins against the Chargers from Christopher McDonald (113), Catoe Byrd (120), Mason Stutler (132), Braylen Yates (175) and Jayvon Barrett (heavyweight). Cole Goucher (106) and Lucas Restrepo (126) won by forfeit.
East won 48-28 against fifth-seeded South Point in the second round.
McDonald, Jamal Hall (138), Yates, Barrett and Goucher had pins. Restrepo won by injury default. Byrd won by tech fall, Stutler took a major decision and Jayden Greene (165) won a decision.
