Staff report
SALISBURY — West Rowan senior Tiara Thompson is continuing to score points at an extreme rate and has scored more than twice as points as any other girl in Rowan County.
Thompson, a UNC Wilmington recruit, is scoring 25.2 points per game for the unbeaten Falcons. The West record for scoring in a season is held by Abigail Wilson, who scored 681 points in 26 games in 2019-20 for a 26.2 average.
Thompson’s teammate, senior Aubrey Martin, continues to shoot 3-pointers efficiently and is second in the county with an average of 11.9 points per game. Carson’s Rylee Hedrick (11.8) and East Rowan freshman Bristol Smith (10.1) are the only other Rowan girls averaging double figures. In fifth place on the scoring list is North Rowan’s Zakiya Oglesby with 9.6 points per game.
BOYS
Carson junior guard CP Perry leads Rowan boys in scoring with 20.7 points per game. He’s scored over 1,200 points for the Cougars in three seasons and is on track to break the school career record set by Darius Moose in 2010 (1,768).
Jamarius Hairston holds the Carson record for scoring average in a season. He averaged 20.5 points in 2017-18. Moose averaged 20.0 in his biggest season.
Salisbury senior guard Braylon Taylor, who has been offered by Catawba College, is second in the county with 19.3 points per game and now has scored 1,188 points for the Hornets. He’s going to be passing some all-time heroes on the Hornets’ career scoring list when the teams return to action.
Carson junior Jacob Mills is another 1,000-point scorer and is third on the county scoring list with 18.2 points per game.
North Rowan junior Carter Williams is on track to be a 1,000-point scorer as a senior and is averaging 17.9 points.
Carson junior Drew Neve is still fifth on the county scoring list with 16.4 points per game, but his season has ended after 14 games. Neve is expected back next season and can easily score 1,000 points for the Cougars as a senior. He has 858.
South Rowan freshman Anderson Pauley was impressive before Christmas, but has only played in one game (briefly) since emergency surgery prior to the Christmas Tournament. Pauley is expected to be back at some point and is averaging 15.2 points per game for the Raiders.
The county has a host of double-figure scorers, including four Salisbury Hornets.
Also averaging double figures are East sophomore Brady Ailshie (15.2), North freshman Jordan Massenburg (15.0), Salisbury senior Jon “JB” Ross (14.2), East junior Logan Bradley (13.1), West senior Josiah Young (13.1), Salisbury freshman Royce Perkins (12.4) and Salisbury junior Blake Smith (11.4).
