WINSTON-SALEM — West Rowan graduate Sophia Blackledge leads Region 10 D2 volleyball in hitting percentage.
Blackledge is a freshman playing for the aptly named Trailblazers of Forsyth Technical Community College. It’s a first-year team that also includes Carson graduate Caroline Snow.
Blackledge is a 5-foot-10 middle blocker. She has 189 kills for the Trailblazers (14-8, 6-6), a little less than 3 kills per set. What’s made her season special is consistency and being smart. Her hitting percentage of .346 is excellent.
Hitting percentage is an important measure of efficiency because it not only credits kills, it penalizes hitting errors, those points you scored for the wrong team by hitting wide, long or short. It’s often a more meaningful stat than total kills. The simple math formula for calculating hitting percentage is: Kills minus Errors divided by Total Attacks.
Blackledge is also doing well in her defensive role of blocking. She has 34 solo blocks and 37 block assists. She’s third in the Region 10 D2 stats in blocks per set.
