SHELBY — North Carolina champion for the first time since 1929, Asheville went through the Southeast Regional in Asheboro undefeated, beating the Alabama champs in extra innings on the final day of the tournament.
Asheville beat Rowan County 12-11 in the opening game of the state tournament in Cherryville.
The American Legion baseball World Series in Shelby starts on Thursday.
It begins with pool play, with the eight teams divided into Stars and Stripes divisions.
Asheville is in a pool with Virginia, Louisiana and New York.
The other pool includes Texas, Indiana, Oregon and Nebraska.
The top two teams in each pool will advance to the semifinals.
