CHINA GROVE – Carson posted a history-making triumph, beating CATA at home in the first round of the 3A West dual team state playoffs.
The 7-2 victory was the first playoff win for the program.
Carson is in the playoffs for the fifth time. While the playoff field for dual team tennis has been expanded in recent years, this Carson team (13-2) would have qualified even in the days when it was more difficult to make the playoffs. The Cougars finished second in the South Piedmont Conference, losing only to league champ Lake Norman Charter during the regular season.
Carson, seeded 11th, prevailed at the top four singles seeds against 22nd-seeded CATA, with Karson Sloop, Austin Atwell, Will Welch and Gryffin Bowman winning in straight sets for a 4-2 lead.
Carson swept doubles, with Sloop-Welch, Atwell-Bowman and Andrew Carter-Landon Jones winning.
Sloop and Carter are seniors.
Next for the Cougars is a trip to sixth-seeded Central Davidson (13-2) on Wednesday. The Spartans cruised past Kings Mountain in the first round.

WINSTON-SALEM — Oak Grove won 6-3 against East Rowan in the 3A dual team state playoffs.
The Grizzlies are the No. 16 seed, while East was seeded 17th. The Mustangs finished 10-6, although Blake Matthews and Will Kesler will move on to the individual regional in Concord this weekend.

Seeded second in the 2A West bracket, Salisbury enjoyed a first-round bye on Monday.
The Hornets (16-1) will host 15th-seeded Community School of Davidson on Wednesday. Community School of Davidson (12-3) won against East Burke in the first round.

There’s one less round in 1A. Gray Stone, seeded seventh in the 1A West bracket, will be in action Wednesday at home against No. 10 Mount Airy.
