First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury will host a community 5K and Fun Run fundraiser on Friday, May 2, at Overton Elementary School. The proceeds will help support the church’s annual mission trip to San Antonio, Del Mar, Mexico.
The summer’s trip will include approximately 50 adult chaperones and teenagers, all committed to serving families and communities in need.
As a lifelong member of First Presbyterian and a freshman at Salisbury Academy, I’m honored to be participating in this mission trip for the first time. I’ve grown up hearing stories from older youth and church members who describe their time in Mexico as deeply meaningful and an experience that shapes not only how they see the world, but how they understand their faith and purpose. The 5K and Fun Run is one of the biggest fundraisers for the trip, and it’s open to all community members. Registration begins at 8 a.m., with the Fun Run kicking off at 9 a.m., followed by the 5K race. There will also be prizes for top finishers and age groups. Funds raised from this event will go directly towards the expenses of this trip. While in Mexico, our group will build two separate houses for two families in desperate need.
Though I’ve not yet been on the trip, I’ve learned from many past participants that the experience is more than just physical labor. It’s a chance to build relationships, to grow spiritually and to step outside of our everyday routines in order to gain a deeper understanding of service, gratitude and connection.
We hope the Salisbury community will come out and support our efforts by joining the run, making a donation or simply cheering us on. Every step helps bring us closer to our goal and closer to the people we hope to serve.
Those experiences for our group are possible due to the incredible generosity of our church and the community who supports us with donations and participation in the race. This year’s race is open to families and runners. Overton Elementary School is located at 1825 Park Road, Salisbury.
